In honor of Earth Day

Earth day is important in our home. We know we should say neither when asked if plastic or paper. My family has a nice collection of shopping bags but I was still using the store bags for my produce. So in honor of Earth Day this is my first tutorial: Reusable Produce Bags.

I used a Dollar Store laundry bag, and I made 4 medium bags (about 11x 10 in) and 2 small (5x10 in) .

You will need:

Mesh laundry bag or mesh fabric
Sewing machine
Cutting mat
Rotary cutter
Metal binder clips
Safety pin
Cord or ribbon

Cut the bag or fabric to desire size. I wanted to have a couple of small bags so I cut two small ones and 4 mediums but if you want only big bags you can fold the bag in 4 and cut.

I used a rotary cutter but it can be done with regular scissors. I found that it worked better to use metal binder clips than regular pins to hold the fabric. First make the top pocket to pass the cord (in my case two of the bags already had the top pocket). Fold half inch and then ¾ in and holding the fabric with the binder clips sew.

Then sew the side and bottom of the bag with french seam ( Burda Style - french seams ) . The bag is almost ready. You just need to pass a cord through the pocket using a safety pin. Any kind of cord or ribbon would do it, I used for two of the bags the cord that came with the laundry bag and for the other four I used a cotton cord that I had in the house.

This bags take just a few minutes to make and can be reuse, washes very easily, are very light and the see-through mesh fabric makes easy checkout at the store.

Necesitas:
